Surfer Guy Rowles has shared all about his encounter with one of the world’s deadliest animals. While surfing at Sujees Surf Stay in Fiji’s Cloudbreak, known for having some of the best waves in the world, Rowles encountered something more fearsome. On the first day of his trip, the Australian surfer was stung by one of the world’s most venomous animals—a box jellyfish. “All of a sudden, something hectic stung my arm. It felt like someone had just poured burning hot oil on me,” Rowles told surfing publication Stab in an interview published Monday. Rowles was in the water with his father when he saw the jellyfish’s tentacles wrap around his arm. He managed to pull them off, but not quickly enough. “I’m looking at my dad going, ‘F--- Dad, am I going to die?’” Rowles recalled, describing the pain. “I was shaking, vomiting, couldn’t really feel my legs.” He was rushed to the nearest hospital, but missed the one-hour mark to administer the antidote. Doctors could only douse his arm with vinegar and morphine to help with the pain. They told him that if he’d been stung anywhere else, he could’ve died. “They said I was lucky that I didn’t get it on my face or neck. And that if I wasn’t young and healthy, it could’ve gone a lot differently,” Rowles said.

One of the brightest stars of the legendary 1990s sports entertainment show Gladiators has died. Lize Van der Walt was 60 years old. Born in South Africa, Van der Walt grew up in Switzerland, quickly distinguishing herself as a breakout runner and climber. After moving to the United Kingdom and finding work as a personal trainer, her friends encouraged her to try out for Gladiators, a TV show centered around physical prowess and athletic fortitude. Van der Walt, who was called Gold on the program, became a sensation in her 1997 debut. However, persistent injuries kept her sidelined. She eventually left the show and moved back to South Africa to become an artist and psychosocial coach. But that wouldn’t be the end of Van der Walt’s TV career. She returned to the Gladiators Arena in 2000, which representatives from the show called a “proud full-circle moment.” Years later, in 2013, Van der Walt was diagnosed with cancer. She died this past Sunday. Following her death, the BBC thanked her for the memories. “You will always be part of Gladiators history,” the broadcaster wrote in a statement.

A lone gunman opened fire at a popular Mexican tourist destination, killing one woman and wounding 13 other people before shooting himself dead. The bloodbath erupted around 11:30 a.m. atop an ancient pyramid in the Teotihuacán archaeological complex, a UNESCO-listed site 30 miles from Mexico City that welcomed more than 1.8 million foreign tourists in 2025. Local prosecutors named the killer as Julio Cesar Jasso Ramirez, 27, who fired from the Pyramid of the Moon. Daniel Edwards, a tourist from Ontario, Canada, who had climbed down from the pyramid with his wife moments earlier, told CBC News: “I just started to hear people scream. I looked up and he was with his gun pointed in the air.” His tour guide told him to run. Another Canadian, Felicia Lee, 26, was among those injured. Six Americans and a Russian were also hurt, along with three Colombian nationals and a pair of Brazilians. The slain woman, who is also Canadian, has not been publicly named. The gunman’s motive is not yet known.

Alan Osmond, a founding member of The Osmonds, has died at 76, his family confirmed. He died at home on Monday, with his wife and eight children at his side, following a long battle with multiple sclerosis. The Osmonds rose to major fame in the late 1960s, starting as a barbershop quartet featuring brothers Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay Osmond. They were later joined by younger siblings, Donny and Jimmy, and became massive teen idols in the 1970s. Speaking to TMZ, the 41-year-old claimed he saw Jesus Christ while intubated and in a coma for four days as the result of a spinal stroke caused by an infection in his foot. According to Aaron, Jesus had dark skin—a little lighter than his own—and long, white hair. He was also surrounded by a glowing light. Aaron described his encounter with the Messiah, which took place in his old neighborhood in New York while it was snowing, explaining that Jesus put his hands on his back, causing all of his pain to disappear. When he awoke after the encounter, he told TMZ that he instinctively knew he didn’t need surgery, something doctors later confirmed. He told the outlet that he can still feel Jesus’ hands on his back, and while he was always a believer, the experience removed any lingering fear of death he had. “I feel like, when he’s ready to bring me home, I just hope that that’s where I’m going,” Aaron said.

The pilots of two Southwest Airlines planes were forced to take quick action after they almost collided in a narrow miss over the weekend. The incident occurred on Saturday near Nashville International Airport, when gusty winds near the airport forced pilots of flight 507 from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to abort their landing. They began to execute a go-around, and were directed by air traffic control to turn right. However, that would have put them in the direct path of another 737 that had been cleared for takeoff from a parallel runway. The Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems on each plane alerted the pilots to take evasive maneuvers and both flights landed safely at their destinations. “Southwest appreciates the professionalism of its Pilots and Flight Crews in responding to the event,” the airline’s spokesperson Lynn Lunsford said in a statement. The FAA said in a statement that the air traffic control’s instructions had put flight 507 “in the path of another airplane” and were investigating the incident. They did not reveal how close the planes got during the incident that took place around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The FAA will also investigate whether the near-miss violated a new rule it passed following the fatal collision between an American Airlines jet and a Black Hawk helicopter in 2025. The rule meant air traffic controllers had to use radar to keep aircraft separated, and not rely on eyesight. The Daily Beast has contacted the FAA and Southwest Airlines for comment.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested the wife of an active-duty U.S. Army soldier as she was attending an appointment at an immigration office last week.

Sgt. First Class Jose Serrano, who has served in the military for 27 years, including three tours in Afghanistan, told CBS News that his wife, Deisy Rivera Ortega, was arrested by ICE on April 14 in El Paso, Texas.

At least 25 people died following an explosion at a fireworks factory in India on Sunday. Four others were also gravely injured at the Vanaja Fireworks Industry in Kattanarpatti, near Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu state. Between 50 and 100 people were at the factory when the explosion tore through several structures. Police told The Independent that the site owner and the foreman both fled and are now the focus of a manhunt. A second explosion also rocked the factory as first responders were trying to clear rubble. Four firefighters and six police officers were injured as a result. Though an official cause of the blasts has not yet been released, The Independent reports employees were mixing chemicals despite the fact that the facility was supposed to be closed. Additionally, the chemicals were reportedly mixed during hours when such work is not allowed. Tina Fey reflected on Saturday Night Live’s politics over the weekend, revealing that she regrets some of her own takes on the show.

“There’s jokes that I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, I was on the wrong side of that,’” Fey said during an appearance on Saturday at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center for History Talks’ event, according to Deadline. Fey joined the show as a writer in 1997, became head writer in 1999, and became a cast member in 2000. Though she strove to be “fair,” Fey admitted that she missed the mark at times.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth abruptly dismissed a senior military commander after reportedly becoming convinced that he was disloyal, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Hegseth fired Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George earlier this month in a one-minute phone call, without giving any advance notice or explanation.

The episode capped months of escalating tensions inside the Pentagon, including clashes between Hegseth and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, a vocal supporter of George.

Days after Navarro roasted Jenner on Instagram for complaining to conservative commentator Tomi Lahren that her passport gender marker’s reversion to male made it a “safety” issue for her to travel, Navarro told The View on Monday that there’s a “special place in hell” for people like the MAGA star.

“On Caitlyn Jenner, I’m going to quote a trans advocate, Janetta Johnson, who said this in 2015: ‘Jenner is a rich white b---h. She can pay for everything she needs. But I think she now needs to put some of that money back into the transgender community, as she has taken a lot.’”

An inside source told People that Trump, 48, is supportive of Woods undergoing intensive therapy. “She loves him and knows that private treatment was necessary,” the source apparently said. Police later found pills of hydrocodone—a powerful opioid—in his pocket. Following his arrest and release, a judge let the golfer leave the country to seek drug treatment. In a post on X, Woods acknowledged the gravity of his legal trouble. “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today‚” he wrote on X. The source speaking to People said that Vanessa Trump’s “optimistic outlook” is a positive for 50-year-old Woods. The tabloid had earlier reported that Trump was not going to leave Woods, and that the two have stayed in communication since the arrest. Bill Maher revealed that his good friend Woody Harrelson will make remarks on his behalf when he receives the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the rebranded “Trump” Kennedy Center in June—after the president tried to block him from getting the award.

It was founded by Aron D’Souza, a lawyer who worked alongside Thiel’s legal network during litigation against the firebrand tabloid Gawker—a campaign that used Thiel’s fortune to fund a sex tape lawsuit brought by the wrestler Hulk Hogan, culminating in a $140 million verdict that drove the news outlet into bankruptcy. It was sold as a principled stand for privacy; in reality, Thiel was settling a personal score. Gawker had outed him as gay years earlier. That case announced something important: if you had enough money and patience, you could bury a media organization. Objection is the industrialized version of that lesson, repackaged as a tech product.

A triathlete has drowned during an Ironman race in Texas. Brazilian Mara Flávia, 38, vanished as she was completing the swimming section of this year’s 140-mile route in Lake Woodlands on Saturday. Woodlands Township Fire Department boss Palmer Buck told Click2Houston that they were called to reports of a “lost swimmer” at 7.30 a.m., almost an hour after the first section of the women’s event started. He added that rescuers were forced to operate with “zero” visibility because the race was ongoing. She was pulled from the water around two hours later, at which point the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said an investigation had been launched. On Facebook, Shawn McDonald, a volunteer at the event, said he spoke to her fellow competitors: “They all said the same thing: She went under. Right here. Right below us. The panic and fear on their faces won’t leave me for a long time.” “I remember seeing... an older gentleman, maybe in his 60s,” he continued, “hanging onto the side of the kayak, goggles removed, with the widest eyes I have ever seen. A thousand-yard stare. He had just watched someone disappear beneath him.”

A MAGA influencer who unsuccessfully ran for Congress on a platform of “ending Islam in Texas” has been barred from entering the U.K. Valentina Gomez was scheduled to speak at the far-right “Unite the Kingdom” rally in May, organized by convicted fraudster and President Donald Trump’s ally, Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. After originally receiving permission last week to travel to the U.K., the country’s home secretary intervened to withdraw the authorization on the grounds that her presence “would not be conducive to the public good,” the same reason it provided when denying travel permission to Kanye West following a string of antisemitic, racist, and pro-Nazi comments. Gomez, 26, spoke at a previous Unite the Kingdom rally in September. “England, they took your guns, they took your swords, and they raped your women... You either fight for this nation or you let all of these rapist Muslims and corrupt politicians take over,” she told the crowd. Last year, she also burned a Quran during a campaign stunt and said that Muslims living in Texas “can f--- off to any of the 57 Muslim nations.” In addition to her failed congressional run, she mounted an unsuccessful bid for Missouri Secretary of State in 2024.

Protesters erected mock windmills on the green at Trump Turnberry Golf Club in South Ayrshire, Scotland, Greenpeace announced Monday. All six structures stood roughly 10 feet tall and were planted beside a sign reading: “Choose Wind. Dump Trump.”

A new survey has found that Americans’ faith in the country’s founding promise of the American Dream is at a historic low. Only 38 percent of respondents in a YouGov poll of 1,821 adults believed the American Dream existed for everyone, despite 61 percent saying they still believed in the concept. Fifty-nine percent said it was less attainable than when they were growing up. Almost half believed children today would be worse off than their parents. Only 17 percent said the next generation would be better off. Mark Rank, a professor of social welfare at Washington University, called the results a “quite shocking” break from historical polling, in which two-thirds of Americans typically said they had achieved the ‘Dream’ or expected to. “Wages for full-time male workers have completely flatlined,” he said. “They’re making no more today than they were in 1973, once you control for inflation.” Traci Parker, an associate professor in African-American history at the University of California, Davis, was blunt. “There was this belief that if you worked hard enough, you wouldn’t have to live paycheck to paycheck,” she said. “I think that idea has gone away completely.” Seventy-three percent said they were worried about saving money. Almost half expected a stock market crash this year.

Top GOP officials say they’re banging their heads against a brick wall trying to squeeze positive messaging past Donald Trump’s unending tirades, flubs and gaffes.

Republican Senators told NOTUS Monday their goal is to trumpet last year’s otherwise popular tax cuts ahead of what already promises to be a bruising battle to retain control of the House and Senate come November’s midterm elections.

Those efforts have extended as far as rebranding the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” under which Trump brought the measures in last year, as the “Working Families Tax Cuts”—a name Trump himself refuses to use as GOP senators say his behavior continues to overshadow the economic benefits its provisions have brought to voters.
