Saturday Night Live star Marcello Hernandez has been announced as the host for ESPN’s annual ESPY Awards next month. The 28-year-old comedian, who was a college soccer player at John Carroll University in Ohio, will host the event on July 15 at the Lincoln Center in New York, making him among the award show’s youngest-ever hosts. “It is an honor, and frankly feels crazy to be hosting the ESPYS this year in New York,” he said in a statement. “I’m sure the energy is going to be great.” Hernandez first appeared on SNL in October 2022, where he quickly gained popularity as the youngest member of the cast and for his Latino heritage. An airline passenger has been arrested after airport security discovered weapons and an improvised explosive device in his luggage. Kimani Osayande Jones, 49, was detained Saturday night as he attempted to board an American Airlines flight from Sacramento International Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, according to prosecutors. Inside his bag, investigators say they found knives, other bladed weapons, zip ties, a butane torch lighter, and a homemade explosive device. Federal officials said testing confirmed the device contained a functional fuse and explosive material. An FBI bomb technician concluded it could have damaged an aircraft window and potentially caused cabin depressurization if detonated at cruising altitude. Authorities also recovered five cellphones with front cameras covered in tape. One allegedly showed a 15-minute countdown timer, while another displayed the message: “We will be awaiting your call.” Jones told authorities he was unaware of the items and would have discarded them. Investigators said he contacted the FBI 13 times this year, reporting fears of being followed and threatened. He has been charged with unlawfully possessing explosive material at an airport, carrying a penalty of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

A Pennsylvania firefighter has been accused of starting three separate blazes in a 30-hour span that his colleagues were forced to respond to. Justin Sholly, 29, a firefighter at the Perseverance Volunteer Fire Company, has been arrested over the spree. Authorities say it began around midnight on Friday in Franconia Township when Sholly allegedly set a stack of logs on fire and later helped extinguish the blaze. His colleagues were then forced to respond to a second call at 4:17 a.m. in an area nearby, where a wooden garage was set ablaze mere feet from homes with 10 people sleeping inside—including Sholly’s former boss, who fired him last year, according to NBC News. Authorities say Sholly was ultimately busted because a license plate database and surveillance footage showed his car in the vicinity of each blaze. He is facing charges for arson, reckless burning or exploding, criminal trespassing, and recklessly endangering a person, among other charges. His bail has been set at $500,000.

A pair of NIH researchers have been charged after allegedly trying to smuggle a deadly virus into an American airport. Vincent Munster and Claude Kwe were discovered at Detroit Metropolitan Airport with vials of mpox, chickenpox, and human DNA, and have been charged with conspiracy and giving federal law enforcement false statements, U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. said. The pair, who work at the National Institutes of Health at Rocky Mountain Laboratory, in Hamilton, Montana, were stopped by Customs and Border Protection officers, who asked what was inside a black plastic case. The researchers said they contained diagnostics and testing equipment, but inspections by the FBI and CBP found 113 vials, 20 of which they tested and found that 17 contained deactivated mpox, also known as monkeypox. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan said the men had landed in Detroit from Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, where an mpox outbreak is ongoing. Munster, 53, a Dutch citizen, and Kwe, 38, a citizen of Cameroon, work at NIH’s Virus Ecology Section on “emerging viral pathogens” and how they “cross the species barrier.” If found guilty, they could face five years in prison.

The new Trump Presidential Library had a remarkable response when asked to hand over Donald Trump’s Twitter messages from his first term.

Liberal Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor blasted her conservative colleagues for “disregarding both democratic values and the rule of law” in a blistering dissent to a decision allowing Alabama to eliminate a majority-Black district at the 11th hour.

Passengers on a Frontier Airlines flight stepped in to restrain a man after he allegedly went on a mid-air rampage and tried to open an emergency exit. Authorities say 51-year-old Juan Gabriel Reyes became disruptive about 45 minutes into the flight, which was traveling from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Chicago on Sunday. Reyes demanded that the crew let him off the aircraft and allegedly attempted to open an exit door. After being stopped, he allegedly pushed against the cockpit door before being escorted away by crew members. As he was ushered away, a flight attendant allowed him to use the restroom, and Reyes attempted to urinate on the bathroom floor, court documents say. The situation escalated when Reyes allegedly grabbed and choked an off-duty flight attendant who had volunteered to sit nearby after the disturbance. Passengers and crew worked together to restrain him using flex cuffs and seatbelt extenders, though he repeatedly broke free before the aircraft landed safely. The suspect was taken into custody after the plane was diverted to Miami and now faces federal charges, including interference with flight crew members and assault.

An actor who once appeared on How I Met Your Mother has been sentenced to 32 years to life in prison, over the 2024 stabbing of his estranged girlfriend. Nick Pasqual, 36, was found guilty last month of attempted murder after the attack on his former girlfriend, Hollywood make-up artist Allie Shehorn, at her Sunland, California home. Shoehorn, who appeared in court on Tuesday with visible scars on her arm and neck, said in her victim impact statement, “When I was lying on the floor in a pool of my own blood, I remembered wondering if this was how my life was going to end. I was terrified, I was in pain.” She added, “You, who I had once trusted, decided my life was something that you could take away.” The vicious attack, where Pasqual stabbed her over 20 times, happened after Shehorn ended the relationship, which she said had turned abusive. Jurors convicted Pasqual of attempted murder, noting the attack caused great bodily injury in a domestic case involving a weapon. He was also convicted of three counts of injuring a spouse or partner, one count of first-degree burglary and one count of forcible rape, which was tied to an alleged incident a month before the stabbing. A representative for Pasqual issued a statement on his behalf, which said he was “deeply saddened by everything surrounding this case, and I continue to wish healing and peace for everyone affected.” He added that he intended to “remain focused on sobriety, recovery, accountability, and a respectful appellate process moving forward.” He played Will in a 2011 episode of How I Met Your Mother and also appeared in Zack Snyder’s 2023 film, Rebel Moon.

The Trump administration has hired a convicted Jan. 6 Capitol rioter to work inside a Pentagon office that handles some of the military’s most sensitive operations.

Elias Irizarry, who was 19 when he broke into the Capitol with a mob of Donald Trump supporters, has been appointed to a post in the Defense Department’s Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict office, where he is assigned to its irregular warfare and counterterrorism section, The Washington Post reports.

The 24-year-old’s hiring has raised red flags among staff, who are questioning his suitability for the highly sensitive government role, four people familiar with the matter told the Post. Two people said the work ranks among the most delicate tasks handled by the Pentagon, with all roles requiring top-secret clearance.

CBS News has terminated the contract of veteran reporter Scott Pelley after he criticized the network’s new MAGA-friendly bosses.

The firing comes after 68-year-old Pelley, who joined CBS in 1989, accused the network’s news editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, 42, of “murdering” 60 Minutes.

“She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it, and she’s been doing exactly that,” Pelley told Nick Bilton on Monday. At the time, Bilton had just been named the new executive producer of 60 Minutes, despite having no TV experience.

Iconic R&B singer Peabo Bryson has died aged 75, just two days after suffering a stroke. “With broken hearts and profound sadness, the family of two-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and balladeer, Peabo Bryson, announces his passing,” the statement read. They confirmed he was “surrounded by the love of his family and those closest to him” when he died on Tuesday. No cause of death was provided. As well as being a popular solo artist, Bryson enjoyed major success with duets. He scored a 1983 hit with Roberta Flack, “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love.” Bryson also won two back-to-back Grammy Awards for Disney duets, “Beauty and the Beast” with Celine Dion in 1992 and “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle in 1993, from the movie Aladdin. Both movie themes also won Best Original Song, which was awarded to the songwriters. Bryon was due to play the Middle C Jazz Club in Charlotte, NC, on June 13 and 14, and had been performing as recently as last month. Bryson previously had a stroke in 2018 and was saved by his wife, who performed CPR for 20 minutes until help arrived. Bryson had been touring in celebration of the 50th anniversary of his debut album “Peabo,” released in 1976. He has a new album, “Grace,” recorded with Janet Jackson’s producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, that has yet to be released, as well as a memoir. His family said Bryson’s songs “carried generations through joyful celebrations, great love stories and enduring moments of comfort and inspiration, creating a legacy that will forever live in the hearts of those who loved him and the countless lives he touched through song.”

Newsom was among those who watched Dr. Mehmet Oz’s White House press conference on Tuesday in which he once again lauded Trump’s “energy,” “mental acuity,” and “remarkable strength.” Oz, when asked why Trump had his fourth known medical checkup since his inauguration 16 months ago, claimed, “I think he likes the results.”

“I do actually believe that he is curious to make sure everything is going in the right direction,” Oz said. “He’s a very meticulous person in so many ways that are often underappreciated.”

An MMA fighter was killed in a tragic bear attack while working at a uranium exploration site in northern Saskatchewan. Hrishikesh Koloth, 27, was doing contract work for Vancouver-based UraniumX Discovery Corp when he was attacked by a black bear—the fourth such incident in the Canadian province’s history. The bear was shot and killed by another civilian after the fatal attack. According to his brother, Arjun, Koloth was an MMA fighter who first trained in Kerala, India, his home state, and later in Canada at Skoden Martial Arts in Penticton. “That was his dream. That’s why he came here. He wanted to fight in the UFC,” Arjun told CBC. The 27-year-old had a coaching job lined up in Vancouver in June and was set to continue fighting to make his dream come true. His brother said, “A job is just a means to an end. The end was to fight.” Arjun remembers him proudly: “I want him to be remembered for what he does. Innocent heart, fighter’s soul. Warrior. And I’d just like to say he fought [the] bear. That’s all… bear didn’t attack him. He attacked the bear."

Breel Embolo’s travel authorization was placed under review just hours before the team was scheduled to leave for the U.S. for the World Cup. “Unfortunately, Breel Embolo is currently unable to travel to the United States with the team,” the Swiss Football Association said. The White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, which was interrupted in April after a gunman tried to assassinate President Donald Trump, is back on. Weijia Jiang, President of the White House Correspondents’ Association, says the event will take place on July 24. Trump, 79, confirmed he would attend the rescheduled event on Truth Social. The original April 25th dinner was cut short after 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen stormed the Washington Hilton and opened fire, shooting one Secret Service officer, who was saved thanks to his bulletproof vest. Trump said the revised event would be held at the Waldorf Astoria. “This announcement is a very good thing in that we cannot allow Lunatics to change our way of life, or even its scheduling,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It will be a ‘HOT’ ticket! Interestingly, the location will be The Waldorf Astoria, on Pennsylvania Avenue, a Building and Ballroom that I built.” Trump didn’t, in fact, build the hotel, but he did lease it in 2013 and made major renovations to the existing structure before selling the lease in 2022.

The House Ethics Committee is investigating a California congressman over sexual misconduct allegations after he admitted to cheating on his wife with a colleague’s congressional aide.

The panel began looking into Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez, 51, after an April story in the New York Post alleged that the lawmaker had been seen kissing a female staffer who worked for another member of Congress at a summer party in 2023, CNN reported, citing three sources with knowledge of the investigation.

The Post reported that the backyard party in question was hosted by Gomez’s Democratic colleague, former California Rep. Eric Swalwell, who resigned from his congressional post and suspended his gubernatorial campaign in April after facing allegations of rape and sexual abuse.

A Georgia groom had his murder charges dropped against him for killing his wife’s stepfather on their wedding night after the state determined that there was “insufficient evidence” in the case. The incident, which occurred in July 2024, initially escalated when Kailagh White, the bride, told a drunk relative to leave after the ceremony, according to Butts County Sheriff Gary Long. Her husband, Aaron White, 33, tried to step in but was allegedly punched to the ground by Kailagh’s stepfather, Jason Maughon, 44. The conflict seemed to be de-escalating until Maughon and the drunk relative returned, with the relative firing a gun at Aaron and shooting him in the hand as Maughon charged at him, according to investigators. Aaron retrieved a weapon from his car and fired back. Maughon was later found dead in the woods with seven gunshot wounds. Initially, Aaron was not facing charges after a 2025 grand jury found he had acted in self-defense. However, the case was presented to another grand jury in January of this year after a renewed effort by Towaliga District Attorney Jonathan Adams, which led to an indictment on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault. The case was dismissed this week. “The State has determined that it cannot meet its burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt at trial due to insufficient evidence,” prosecutors wrote in a court filing. Maughon’s family slammed the decision, emphasizing that Maughon was unarmed during the entire interaction, with his father, Dan Maughon, telling a local news station, “We are looking for justice for my son,” adding that he was shot “seven times, once in the back and as he lay on the ground.” The groom has said he acted to protect guests, but the incident still haunts him. “It stays with you. It’s not something that really ever leaves you. You don’t forget it,” he told WSB-TV.

The White House has offered an explanation for Donald Trump’s manic Truth Social activity that is as unhinged as the president’s posts themselves.

After a Daily Beast analysis found that Trump’s 861 posts and reposts in May were his most ever in a single month this term, the White House told the Beast the reason for the barrage is simply that Trump’s social media platform is hotter than ever.

“Truth Social has never been hotter, and it’s because President Trump offers his unfiltered and direct thoughts to the American people, without the biased media taking him out of context,” White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales said in a statement.

A provision that would directly benefit President Donald Trump in the agreement over his dropping his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS is set to go forward, even as the administration hits pause on the “Anti-Weaponization Fund.”

A 40-year-old American influencer was found dead in a luxury hotel in Brazil after flying to the country for plastic surgery, in what authorities are calling a “suspicious death.” Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, known online as Jerry Gogosian, was found on Sunday in her hotel room by her surgeon after she didn’t answer a phone call, according to Art Review. Authorities have not yet released a cause of death for the California native. She was found surrounded by an empty vodka bottle, a broken glass on the floor, and unidentified pills. According to authorities, the surgeon reported that he had previously taken her to the hospital in a prior incident, possibly due to an overdose, after she confided to him about her substance use. A hotel spokesperson told the publication Hyperallergic that they are collaborating with the authorities but would not share further details out of respect for the guest’s privacy and the ongoing investigation. The star had more than 150,000 followers on Instagram and pursued various ventures after graduating from the San Francisco Art Institute, including hosting a podcast and heading a popular art-world newsletter.

Author and journalist Molly Jong-Fast said she doesn’t believe that the 79-year-old president has given up on his Minnesota-style raids—he simply knew to set them aside to avoid jeopardizing the Republican Party’s odds in the midterms.

A New York-based aid organization said the deadly Ebola outbreak spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo is “likely far worse” than the scenario described by the official figures. So far, 282 cases and 42 deaths have been confirmed, out of more than 1,000 suspected cases and more than 200 suspected deaths, according to the DRC’s health ministry. But response efforts are struggling due to detection delays and dangerously low levels of contact tracing, according to the International Rescue Committee. Only about 20 percent of contacts are currently being traced, and the virus may have been spreading undetected since March or even earlier, according to the IRC. At least nine cases and one death have been confirmed in Uganda, and more could spread to Burundi or South Sudan. “Transmission is spreading across multiple areas, and communities are losing trust in the response,” according to Rachel Howard, senior technical emergency health adviser at the IRC.

Eight bottles of one of the most prestigious wines on the planet, suspected of being squirreled away by the Nazis, have been restored by the Château that made them. The bottles of Château d’Yquem, made around 130 years ago, are thought to have survived both WWII and decades of communist occupation. The sweet whites from Sauternes in Bordeaux, France, mostly made between 1892 and 1896, were discovered in 1985 beneath the floorboards of the Czech castle of Becov nad Teplou, where they will now go on display. They belonged to the Beaufort-Spontin family, who fled the country after the war, suspected of collaborating with the Nazis, CBS News reported. However, the wine was left in place until 10 years ago, after which laboratory tests confirmed it was genuine and restoration began. Toni El Khawand, the cellar master of d’Yquem told AFP, “We tasted a very small quantity to be sure that, aromatically and in terms of balance on the palate and overall perception, the wine corresponded to a Chateau d’Yquem of that age.”

President Donald Trump’s plan to supercharge denaturalizations of foreign-born Americans has bumped up against the realities of the legal system—and the protections it affords U.S. citizens.

Trump, 79, has vowed to make denaturalization a priority, with the Department of Justice compiling a list of 385 foreign-born Americans it wants to target for denaturalization and pressuring attorneys to accept transfers from other departments to work on the cases.

The administration has filed 35 cases since the start of Trump’s second term, and says it’s “laser focused” on rooting out fraud in the naturalization process.

A truck driver and former soldier has unearthed a priceless 1,700-year-old gold ring in the English countryside. Kevin Minto, an amateur detectorist, was searching farmland close to Ilminster in the south west of the U.K. when his detector picked up on the buried object. He initially assumed he’d located a coin or a brooch. “You’re a little dumbfounded, really. One of the boys I was with was screaming: ‘We’re rich, we’re rich,’” he said. The piece features an engraved gemstone depicting Victoria, the Roman goddess of triumph, steering a chariot drawn by two horses. Weighing 48 grams and dating to roughly A.D. 297, the object is believed to have belonged to someone of considerable standing during years of regional turmoil under Roman occupation. The South West Heritage Trust, a historic association, paid £78,000 ($105,000) for the ring and 297 accompanying coins. Senior curator Amal Khreisheh hailed the find as “an unparalleled discovery for Britain.” Minto, who paid off his mortgage with his share, says he’ll continue to visit the site where he unearthed the ring, hoping to find other treasures.

Melissa Rein Lively, 40, founder of the “anti-woke” PR firm America First, was wanted by British Transport Police for allegedly pulling a woman’s hair at Bond Street station last October.

She accepted a conditional caution over the incident, while an assault-by-beating charge against her was withdrawn. Rein Lively was not present at Westminster Magistrates’ Court for the proceedings, the BBC reported.

A skydiver who died in an accident in Southern California has been identified as a tourist. Pascal Pierre Petetin, 57, of Punaauia, Tahiti, died following an apparent midair collision involving a group of experienced skydivers on the afternoon of May 28. Petetin was jumping with two friends from overseas while visiting Skydive Perris when the accident occurred. A statement from Skydive Perris said all three brought their own equipment for the jumps, rather than taking part in tandem jumps. Their parachutes had successfully deployed, leading to suggestions that there was a collision in freefall between at least two of the divers. Riverside County sheriff’s deputies found Petetin’s body in a field close to Interstate 215, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the other skydivers was taken to hospital in a critical condition, while the third was unhurt. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. In a statement, Skydive Perris offered its “sincerest condolences to the individual’s family and politely asks for privacy as we mourn together as a community.” Petetin shared photos of himself skydiving on his social media profiles and worked at the Tahiti-Faa’a International Airport.

A D.C. judge has shot down law enforcement attempts to stop protesters displaying a sequence of numbers the Trump administration insists represent a threat against the president’s life.

Justice Randolph D. Moss, a Barack Obama appointee, ruled Monday that police could not force Accountability Now USA, a protest group, to stop displaying flags and signs bearing the slogan “86-47” because it amounts to free speech protected by the Constitution, the New York Times reported.

The White House has repeatedly claimed that the number “86” suggests a desire to kill Trump, who as the 47th president of the United States is represented by the number “47” in the phrase.

Legendary NBA player and coach Rick Adelman has died at the age of 79, the National Basketball Coaches Association announced on Monday. No cause of death was provided. “Adelman will be remembered not only as a coach and a player, but also as a mentor to so many in the basketball community,” the NBCA wrote on X. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Adelman family during this difficult time. The Hall of Famer began his seven-year career as a player with the San Diego Rockets as their 79th overall pick in the 1968 NBA Draft. He also had stints with the Portland Trail Blazers, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Jazz, and Kansas City-Omaha Kings before pivoting to coaching. He began the second phase of his career at Chemeketa Community College in Oregon. Trail Blazers coach Jack Ramsay, who was keeping tabs on him, tapped Adelman to work with the Trail Blazers. He stayed with the team for six years, leading them to the NBA Finals twice. He then coached the Golden State Warriors for a brief period before spending 10 years with the Sacramento Kings between 1998 and 2008. Adelman also coached the Houston Rockets, where he led the team to a 22-game winning streak—the fourth longest in NBA history. He finished his coaching career as head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves before retiring in 2014, and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021. Adelman is survived by his wife, Mary Kay, their six children, and 12 grandchildren.
