The mayor of a Mexican town from which 43 students disappeared was arrested in the nation’s capital Tuesday morning. Jose Luis Abarca, the mayor of Iguala, was taken into police custody in Mexico City, along with his wife, Maria de los Angeles Pineda Villa, according to Mexican news reports. Both are allegedly linked to the disappearance, and possible massacre, of 43 student teachers who were planning to hold a protest during a party for Pineda on Sept. 26. Witnesses said they saw police clash with the students and then carry them off in bundles. None have been heard from since. Late last month, Mexican Attorney General Jesus Murillo declared Abarca and Pineda the “probable masterminds” behind the missing students when he issued a warrant for their arrests.
