Having been popular now in the blogosphere for some time, New York City community-affairs detective Rick Lee has gone mainstream: The New York Times profiles the NYPD’s “Hipster Cop,” a favorite topic of conversation among Occupy Wall Street protesters. Known for his nerdy glasses, skinny ties, and cardigan sweaters, Detective Lee has served as one of the police department's main liaisons with protesters. The 45-year-old cop (he looks much younger) lives on Staten Island, eats organic food, and wears skinny jeans when off-duty. Asked by the Times if he’s the Hipster Cop, Lee replied, “That’s what they call me.” He’s just four months away from retirement; asked what he may do, he said, “Maybe I’ll grow my hair long again and join these guys.”
