The meeting was reportedly set up to “establish a line of communication” between the new administration and the Kremlin, the White House told The New York Times. Flynn, the former national security adviser, was in contact with the Russian envoy during the campaign and the transition, a controversy that eventually led to his ouster in the first weeks of Trump's presidency. The role of President Trump's son-in-law, Kushner, in the meeting is unclear. Newly confirmed Attorney General Jeff Sessions confirmed this week that he also met twice with the ambassador during the campaign—despite denying the contact on previous occasions.
