17-Year-Old Muslim Girl Killed After Leaving Virginia Mosque

Police in Virginia found what they believe are the remains of a teenage girl who went missing early Sunday while leaving a mosque with friends. The girl has been identified as 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen by the mosque, the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, and her family, according to The Washington Post. Fairfax County police said they arrested and charged a man identified as Darwin Martinez Torres with her murder. Hassanen had reportedly been walking near the mosque with friends early Sunday when a motorist confronted the group, prompting all but Hassanen to flee. A body believed to be that of Hassanen was later found in Sterling, and police reportedly told her mother that she had been struck with a metal bat. Police are investigating whether the killing may constitute a hate crime.
