The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee said Thursday that President Trump’s comments in Poland “undermine U.S. interests.” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) accused Trump of putting his own interests ahead of the nation’s, and suggested the president may appear weak if he does not firmly address with Vladimir Putin the issue of election interference. In Trump’s comments, he cast doubt on the possibility of Russia’s involvement in the U.S. election, saying, “I think it very well could be Russia but I think it could very well have been other countries.” Schiff continued to advise Trump: “He should also confront Russia over its continued destabilization of Ukraine, and the illegal annexation and continued occupation of Crimea and parts of Georgia.” He added: “[Trump] should make it clear that the U.S. is not going to make common cause with Russia in propping up Bashar al-Assad in Syria, nor turn a blind eye to any potential Russian support of the Taliban or increased trade with North Korea.” The U.S. president will meet with Putin on Friday during the G-20 meetings in Hamburg.
