Arab States Demand Qatar Cut Ties to Iran

DIPLOMACY

To resolve conflict, told to close down Al Jazeera, shutter Turkish military base.

Four Arab states boycotting Qatar over its alleged support for terrorism have presented the small oil-rich country a list of demands in order to resolve the spat. After cutting ties with Doha this month, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Bahrain have demanded that Qatari authorities shut down the Al Jazeera television station, reduce diplomatic ties to Iran, and close a Turkish military base, according to a copy of the list cited by the Associated Press. The four Persian Gulf neighbors also asked Qatar to surrender terrorists on its territory and provide an unspecified sum as compensation. The list, which Kuwait gave to Qatar, asks that the demands be met within 10 days. Doha has already said it would not be willing to close Al Jazeera and warned that the blockade must be lifted before negotiations can begin, according to the AP.
