
Susur Lee
Acclaimed chef Susur Lee is owner and executive chef at Shang in New York, Zentan in Washington, D.C., and Madeline's and Lee in Toronto. Susur learned how to cook while serving his culinary apprenticeship at Hong Kong's renowned Peninsula Hotel. He developed a unique approach to food that he defines as global Chinese, focusing on flavor combinations from Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong. In January, Susur will open his fifth restaurant in Singapore called Chinois at the exclusive Hotel Michael. It's his latest and most ambitious international adventure, and it will be primed with recipes collected during his travels to Hong Kong, Taipei, and Singapore. Born in Hong Kong, He is the author of the cookbook A Culinary Life.

When I want good home-style Chinese food, I come here with my family. There are no frills about itâ just an honest restaurant thatâs not about pomp and circumstance but about good ingredients prepared in a traditional Chinese manner. The communal element of sharing a table with at least another group encourages conversation and sharing. Run by a husband and wife team (she handles the front of the house and he runs the kitchen), they turn out great BBQ meats, dim sum, and the daily soup that never fails.
