Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, one of Hollywood’s best, longest-lasting couples, called it quits this year. But that’s no reason to give up on love! VIEW OUR GALLERY of pairs we still think will stand the test of time.

As if this year hasn’t been rough enough on love, with the Gosselins and the Sanfords and the epically dysfunctional Woodses, now comes news that Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, one of the last great American couplings, are officially kaput.

No reason was given for the breakup, although there was some speculation, since denied, that Sarandon, 63, went full-cougar on Robbins, 51, and had an affair with a much-younger business partner. Whatever the cause, such an unexpected breakup can’t help but shake our faith a little, especially now, when we’ve reached our threshold for depressing love stories of 2009.

For so long, Sarandon and Robbins seemed like a model pair. They met on the set of Bull Durham, never married and have two grown children together. They did adorable Hollywood things, like attend each other’s Oscar ceremonies (both are winners) and vocally support the same liberal causes. All evidence suggested they were the lucky ones, the rare couple who had found a way to make it work, who would actually grow old together. After 23 years, they’re done.

Is there nothing left to believe in anymore?

In fact, there is. There is still true love out there, and there are still glamorous couples who are madly in love, even after all these years. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, together since 1983, are going strong. Diane Sawyer and Mike Nichols married in 1988 and seem impervious to the pulls and pressures that have undone so many prominent couples over the years. Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore have only been at it since 2003, but doesn’t it just feel like they’re going to last?

Everywhere you look, from the White House to Elton John’s house, there are signs that true love really can last. VIEW OUR GALLERY of some of the world’s best matches.
