Let the Games Begin!
Despite the tragic death of an Olympian luger that raised pressing safety concerns, the XXI Olympic Winter Games kicked off in downtown Vancouver last night, with more than 50,000 ticketholders and 2,500 athletes attending. The ceremonies, which highlighted Canada’s indigenous roots, were dedicated to the fallen Olympian and the seven remaining members of the Georgian delegation. Today's big event was supposed to be the Men's Downhill, starring the infamous Bode Miller, who placed eighth in Thursday's downhill training to become the top American in the event. But early this morning the race was canceled as rain and high temperatures rendered the course a slushy mess. Vancouver has been plagued by warm weather and a lack of snow, frustrating efforts to keep the weather-dependent events running smoothly.
