Elle magazine’s “25 at 25” party in Hollywood Thursday night brought out the usual gaggle of young stars: a Social Network cast member, Entourage girls—even the erstwhile star of The Rachel Zoe Project. But then, with little fanfare, stepped into this crowded hotel bar the biggest star of all: Cindy McCain.

The sea of shiny starlets with perfect curls parted as McCain, in a cream-colored suit and close-cropped hair, traversed the room. But Miranda Cosgrove, of iCarly, seemed unphased by the political star-wattage in the party. When asked if she supported John McCain, Cosgrove demurred to her publicist: “She can't even vote and is not political,” the flack insisted. “She’s seventeen.”

The event feted Elle’s October issue, in which Daily Beast contributor Meghan McCain posed as Tippi Hedren for a portfolio on hot twenty-somethings. But Mrs. McCain paused on a more serious note: to reflect on the heartbreaking recent death of Tyler Clementi, which has brought the nation’s focus to the issue of teen suicide and online bullying.

"Unfortunately a terrible tragedy has occurred, but something was learned from it,” said McCain. “And something good will come from it too." McCain, who has famously broken from her husband’s stance on gay marriage, said that the outpouring of support for gay teens is "as it should be." McCain is a supporter of California’s “No H8 Campaign,” which is devoted to the protest of the passage of Proposition 8. "It's time people all around the globe stop hate,” she concluded. "There's really no room for hate."
