
Peter Schoolwerth’s Caravaggio riff is in a group show at Miguel Abreu Gallery on New York’s Lower East Side. I’ve never been a fan of Schoolwerth’s “straight”, licked surrealism, but I’m captivated and convinced by the way this pictures pulls its source apart. Schoolwerth, for once, seems to shake the normal scaffolding of painting. The face rewrites Picasso.
