Desperate...in July

Self-Infliction

Limbaugh, Sununu, and how Romney's hurting himself more than the attacks are.

These people are really desperate. As Sullivan noted, when Limbaugh is reduced to saying Obama "hates America," you know they're in trouble. Not that what Limbaugh says on a good day contains one nannogram of truth or deceny, but you know what I mean. And John Sununu. Pathetic.

What was he doing (I assume past tense is now accurate) as the chief surrogate anyway? He does not exactly grab the camera with charisma. His remarks were amateurish and stupid. I guess he thinks it is the epitome of American-ness to make $43 million and pay a lower tax rate than a school teacher.

I'd love to see them keep it going. They're not going to get much of anywhere trying to persuade middle America that the President of the United States hates the United States. I remember Hillary's Senate campaign in 2000. Republicans--then as now, they idiotically and vainly assumed all decent Americans shared their demented view of their political foes--paid for some phone calls tying her somehow to the terrorists who blew up the USS Cole. The New York Post chimed in, natch. It blew up in their faces in a big way.

And then finally the "Obama hates small business people" attack. Ludicrous. Here is the sentence right-wingers quote: "If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that." I admit, it made me gulp when I first read it. Then I read the full passage:

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

He quite obviously meant "that road or bridge." Somebody else made the road or bridge happen. Next.

Fox is dredging up old drug use. The disloyalty meme is, I'd expect, going to get louder. They're popping neck veins already and it's only July. It's awesome.

You'd never know the race is more or less tied! Or is it? Probably for now. If the Romney-taxes story is going to start seeping into people's heads, this is probably going to be the week, so we'll see if the polls start shifting by the weekend, and if Romney can change the subject. In the meantime, their hysteria and cluelessness and arrogance are hurting them more than the attacks are.
