Bassem Youssef, Egypt's Jon Stewart, Harassed for Being Offensive

Liberalism in the MENA

"Freedom activists" (kidding: they're definitely not) in Egypt are trying to punish Bassem Youssef for making fun of people, ideas, and Pakistan... aka, what I do on most weekdays. Remind me never to travel to Egypt.

The first report accuses Youssef of insulting Prosecutor General Tala’at Abdullah and officers charged with guarding the High Court through Twitter.

The second report claims Youssef insulted Islam during his show’s 14th episode by mocking the obligatory prayers. According to the Brotherhood the report says that this is contempt of Islamic religion and questioning one of the five pillars of Islam leads to atheistic thinking, which in turn may prompt people to profess a religion other than Islam.

The third report filed against Youssef claims that his show insulted Pakistan during Morsi’s visit and could therefore strain relations between Pakistani and Egyptian authorities. Youssef wore an enlarged version of the hat which Morsi wore when he received an honorary doctorate in Pakistan.
