Is there anything handsome Harry can't do? A gay solider has written a book about his experiences of being out in the British army, including a remarkable story of how Prince Harry, who was his tank commander, confronted six soldiers who threatened to “batter” him, telling them to "back the f*** off".

Trooper James Wharton describes the Prince as "one of my greatest protectors", after he tearfully told him "I think I'm going to be murdered by the infantry,” the Mail on Sunday reported.

As he explained what had happened Harry had a “complete look of bewilderment” on his face and responded: “Right I'm going to sort this ---- out once and for all."

Trooper Wharton, who was on training in Canada with the Prince at the time of the 2008 incident, said: “I will always be grateful to Harry and I will never forget what happened. Until he went over and dealt with everything I was on track for a battering.”

Wharton has written about his experiences alongside the young Prince in his new book Out in the Army. He writes:

"I told (Harry) everything that had gone on. I couldn’t stop the tears from welling up in my eyes.

He said: ‘Right. I’m going to sort this s*** out once and for all.’

Harry climbed out of the tank and started having a go. I worried he was about to make the whole thing worse, but he wasn’t holding back. Prince Harry was sticking up for me and putting a stop to the trouble. I had been on track for a battering and had been rescued.

He came back ten minutes later and told me the problem had been ‘sorted’.

He told me: ‘I knew one of his officers and we cleared everything up. I also told those other lads to back the f*** off, too.’

Wharton also claims that after sharing a tank for several weeks they became friends and Harry discussed his sex life and the fact that he had been told he and his brother Prince William were gay icons.
