A worker at the Queen's Norfolk estate, Sandringham, is in a critical condition in hospital today after falling off a ride-on mower and being trapped underwater at the estate.

Norfolk police today told the Daily Beast that the man is still in a critical condition. He was "underwater for a number of minutes" and the accident is being investigated by the Police and the Health and Safety Executive, police said.

The accident happened at about 1:30pm, just hours after the Queen had held a garden reception for fellow corgi owners.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Lower Lake after the man, in his 30s, who is a worker on the 22,000 acre Sandringham Estate, apparently became trapped underwater by the grass cutter which he was riding.

The lake is about 200m wide and is the largest of four ponds in the gardens.

Two police officers and a colleague from the estate retrieved the man from the water and began CPR before paramedics arrived.

The man was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital by air ambulance where he remains in a critical condition.
