Maybe the exploits of the Anthony Weiner in New York helped push the Anthony Weiner in Massachusetts over the edge. Having that name and its attendant endless puns cannot be easy in the first place.
And imagine how it’s been of late for the 25-year-old Weiner of Revere, Massachusetts, with the whole world talking about the New York Weiner sexting with young women.
Then the Massachusetts Weiner allegedly discovered texts from another man on his wife’s cellphone.
Bad enough to have the same name as the New York Weiner who betrayed his wife. The Massachusetts Weiner apparently feared he had been betrayed by his wife.
The Massachusetts Weiner then allegedly did a little texting of his own, posing as his wife and luring the man in question to a house. He is said to have then proven himself to be the Anthony Weiner who should have gone by the name Carlos Danger.
According to prosecutors, this Weiner hit the man in the head with a baseball bat, then tied him to a chair and menaced him with a screw gun and a BB gun. The victim’s response was to vomit. The alarmed Weiner allegedly responded as a politician might.
“Weiner gave him money to stay quiet about the attack and sent him away in a cab,” a statement by the Suffolk County district attorney’s office reports.
The victim was hospitalized with a head injury. Weiner was arrested on charges of kidnapping and assault with intent to commit murder. He is due back in court on Monday, represented by attorney William Cintolo, who was disbarred and briefly imprisoned three decades ago for conspiracy to obstruct justice in a big Mafia case. Cintolo has since been reinstated. His other clients have included Whitey Bulger’s nephew Christopher.
“Can I ask who you are calling about?” the person who answered his office phone asked on Friday.
“Anthony Weiner,” she was told.
She really did seem to try very hard not to laugh.
The last time the Massachusetts Weiner was the subject of police attention was in 2012, when cops were dispatched to the Danversport Yacht Club on a report of a “groom out of control.” The groom proved to be Weiner. He had reportedly become irate when his brothers were refused a drink because the bar had closed. He ended up in a tussle with his new brother-in-law.
But it was Weiner’s mother, Darlene DeIorio, who really got the cops’ attention as she pummeled the bride’s mother. The cops hustled DeIorio to a rear deck with the hope of breaking up the altercation, but she circled around the front and continued. It was all captured on video.
““There are chairs being thrown, hair being pulled,” a prosecutor later said, and noted, “This is her son’s wedding.”
The charges against the groom as well as against a bridesmaid were dropped. Weiner’s mother was subsequently convicted of assault and given probation.
The mother of the New York Weiner is by all accounts an entirely peaceable schoolteacher turned banker, though she must be exasperated by the scandal surrounding her otherwise promising son.
If ever a mom had cause to start throwing chairs.
Meanwhile, anybody named Anthony Weiner should forget about texting.
