Pretty damn impressive, that Middleton girl.

At a time when most new moms are still struggling to get out of the front door without being covered in regurgitated milk, Kate Middleton was back in the spotlight today for her first public engagement - supporting her husband as William kicked off a 135-mile ultra-marathon which circumnavigates the island of Anglesey, where the couple have been living for the past two years.

Needless to say, all the focus was on the new mom, who was braving the universe just five and half weeks after giving birth to her first baby. Maternity leave is over, it seems.

She looked trim and fit. Kate has been doing yoga and pilates and these are clearly paying dividends on a physical level as she appeared to be almost back to her pre-baby shape. No sign of the mummy tummy, that's for sure.

She was dressed casually in skinny jeans, a polka dot Zara top and a green Ralph Lauren blazer jacket. Her hair, which was not tied back, blew in the wind. Kate and William have neither a nanny nor maternity nurse - but didn't look particularly wrecked.

They spent about twenty minutes chatting to competitors in the race.

The young royal parents did not bring their son, five-week-old Prince George, with them - and Kate said her mom Carole was home minding the third in line to the throne.

According to the Daily Mail the Duchess told one wellwisher, 'He's doing very well. He's with granny at the moment. He's sleeping well but I know these things change at a minute's notice.'

She also told Lauren Hindcliffe, 11: 'George has been very good and sleeping well.'

This is the first time that the Duchess has been seen since leaving hospital following George's birth on July 22 - with the exception of those unfortunate pictures of her at the supermarket that the Palace very successfully sought to suppress (in the UK at least).

According to the Daily Mail, Kate only decided at the last minute to attend the marathon start, "Initially the Duchess wasn't going to attend but she was also keen for the chance to thank the people of Anglesey herself for the warmth and hospitality they have shown her and the Duke," their source said.

Aides told the Mail her decision to attend was down to how she - and George - were feeling on the day.

The Duchess's next official engagement will be on September 12 when she attends the inaugural Tusk Conservation Awards with her husband in London.

Back to work.
