Fringe Factor: Convicted Killer, Registered Sex Offender Runs for California Governor

Fringe Factor

A registered sex offender and convicted killer is running for governor of California. An Alaska state Senator wants to give away pregnancy tests, but not birth control, in bars. And the knife rights movement is decriminalizing switchblades one state at a time.

Registered Sex Offender, Convicted Killer Running for California Governor

California gubernatorial candidate Glenn Champ may not have a lot of experience in politics, but he believes his extensive criminal history makes him more than equipped to deal with politicians. Champ is a registered sex offender who spent more than 10 years in state prison, convicted of assault with intent to commit rape and voluntary manslaughter. Among the other crimes on his lengthy rap sheet are carrying a concealed firearm and loitering to solicit a prostitute. The 48-year-old Republican did not directly address his criminal past when he spoke to the California GOP at a recent event with the party’s other gubernatorial candidates. But he did acknowledge his record in a later interview, after it was reported by Fresno’s KMJ radio. “I found the Lord when I got arrested for picking up the prostitutes,” he said. He called the voluntary manslaughter case, in which he pleaded no contest after hitting a man with his car, a “tragic accident.”

Alaska Senator Wants to Give Away Pregnancy Tests, But Not Birth Control, in Bars

Alaska state Senate Finance Committee co-chairman Pete Kelly wants to combat his state’s fetal alcohol syndrome epidemic by providing bars and restaurants with state-funded pregnancy tests. So, you know, if there’s any chance you might be pregnant you can be sure before you order that drink. Kelly has made clear that he is not, however, in favor of state-sponsored birth control, in bars or elsewhere. “Birth control is for people who don’t necessarily want to act responsibly,” Kelly told the Anchorage Daily News, claiming that while pregnancy tests can help someone who “just doesn’t know,” birth control is “a level of social engineering that we just don’t want to get into.”

The Knife Rights Movement: Repealing Switchblade Bans One State at a Time

The Tennessee General Assembly’s decision this week to repeal the state’s ban on switchblades revealed the existence of the budding knife-rights movement. Thanks in large part to Knife Rights, an eight-year-old, little-known knife advocacy group modeled after the National Rifle Association, a bill that eliminates limits on knife length and overrules any town or city knife regulations, is now on its way to Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam’s desk. “We are really rewriting knife law in America,” Knife Rights chairman Doug Ritter said. Switchblades, or so-called “automatic” knives were banned by federal law in 1958 and became regulated by many states subsequently. Knife Rights is working to change that. “Counting Tennessee, we’ve passed 13 bills in 11 states in four years,” Ritter said.

Donald Rumsfeld: A ‘Trained Ape’ Would Be Better at Foreign Policy Than Obama

Yup, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld compared President Obama to an ape. Well, actually, he declared the president’s administration less competent than an ape when it comes to foreign relations. Rumsfeld was talking about the Obama administration’s actions in Afghanistan on Fox News’On the Record with Greta van Susteren this week when he ranted, “We have status of forces agreements probably with 100, 125 countries in the world. This administration, the White House and the State Department, have failed to get a status of forces agreement. A trained ape could get a status of forces agreement. It does not take a genius.”
