Aladdin
Since its premiere this March, Aladdin has received rave reviews. The New York Times says it “sticks to the movie’s formula, but also infuses the conventions of the genre with a breezy insouciance that scrubs away some of the material’s bland gloss.” Based on the 1992 animated Disney movie, Aladdin has received five Tony nominations this year, including Best Musical, Best Original Score written for the Theatre, and Best Choreography. The show is located in the New Amsterdam Theatre.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
While Neil Patrick Harris is reason enough to see Hedwig, the show has racked up eight Tony nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Costume Design, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role of a Musical (Harris). Check it out at the Belasco Theatre before it closes August 17.
Les Misérables
The unforgettable story about the man who stole a loaf of bread and wound up regretting it for the rest of his life has returned to Broadway’s Imperial Theatre. The stage adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel has received three Tony nominations this year: Best Revival of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, and Best Leading Actor in a Musical (Ramin Karimloo).
If/Then
Starring Tony Award Winner Idina Menzel at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, If/Then tells the story of Elizabeth (Menzel) who goes through wondering what would happen if she did made different decisions after moving to New York City. This musical has been nominated for two Tonys: Best Original Score Written for the Theatre, and Best Actress in a Leading Role of a Musical (Menzel).
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder
The Walter Kerr Theatre is the home of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, the story of a man looking to eliminate the line of people who are up for a hefty inheritance from a relative. (And by “eliminate,” he actually kills them.) The play has been nominated for ten Tony Awards this year, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Book of a Musical.
A Raisin in the Sun
Even if you hated reading it in high school English class, the revival of the classic American drama brings Denzel Washington to Broadway. Raisin has racked up five Tony nominations, including Best Revival of a Play, and Best Direction of a Play. (Though Washington wasn’t able to grab a nomination.)
Of Mice and Men
James Franco and Chris O’Dowd bring John Steinback’s novella to life, with what The New York Times says is banter “worth of a Judd Apatow-style bromance. All this, of course, is in Of Mice and Men, a story of migrant workers during the great depression.
