Even though the “world’s most talked about couple” was nowhere to be found at London Fashion Week, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian still terrified the runway in the form of a head-turning sweater portrait at the Ashish Spring/Summer 2015 show.
The power couple managed to cause at splash at London Fashion Week without making a single appearance thanks to London-based designer Ashish Gupta, who sequined the couple’s portraits onto his Spring 2015 collection.
The 39-year-old designer, who was educated at Central Saint Martins, has always had a penchant for glitz, choosing sequins as his signature style. This season was no different, as he sent both men and women down the runway in shimmering head-to-toe looks. “I think I have a bit of a sequin fetish,” he told BULLETT. “It’s amazing how color gets another dimension with sequins,” he added, explaining his fascination with how light creates these effects.
However, no amount of light was able to transform the Kimye depiction—something is a little off about their hand stitched portraits. And by off we mean absolutely terrifying.
Ashish’s staple DIY aesthetic seems to be catching on among some high-profile figures. Jeremy Scott referenced the technique in his collection presented at New York Fashion Week, which also included crafty accessories and sculptures designed by Miley Cyrus. “We’re on the same wavelength,” Scott told V Magazine in reference to his collaboration with Cyrus. “I love that there’s a DIY feel to the sculptures, which is part of the look of the show.” Coincidentally, Cyrus is also emblazoned on one of Ashish’s pieces, along with members of One Direction.
Given Kim and Kanye’s history of acquiring self-refrencing items—such as Kim’s wedding gift portrait and Kanye’s recent purchase of Kash Kurrency, a hyperrealist pen drawing by Australian artist CJ Hendry that features the musician as the face on a one hundred dollar bill—we can safely assume that the couple will be snagging his-and-her Kimye sweaters quite soon.
