Isn't this the cutest?

Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch has announced his engagement to his girlfriend, Sophie Hunter, a theatre actress and director, in the most traditional manner possible, with a paid-for announcement in The Times.

The announcement names his parents, Wanda and Timothy, and hers, Katharine and Charles.

Comedian David Mitchell and writer Victoria Coren announced their engagement in the Times, in March 2012.

The Mail On Sunday recently reported that the 38-year-old actor flew to Edinburgh to ask Miss Hunter's mother's permission for her daughter's hand in marriage.

The Telegraph says that Miss Hunter, 36, played Annabel Blythe-Smith to Cumberbatch’s Henry Clark in the thriller “Burlesque Fairytales” in 2009.

She reportedly studied French and Italian at Oxford before attending the prestigious Jacques Lecoq school of theatre in Paris.

Asked earlier this year if he wanted to settle down, Cumberbatch said: "I can imagine I'll look back at this point in my life and think: 'Wow that was really extraordinary.' But at the same time I hope I'm looking back and going, 'Oh, that was the moment I got on with life and realised things beyond myself.

“Without using words like 'marriage'. 'children' and 'family' - although I have just used those words - put it this way, I hope I've got other people to look back with me at that point. I hope I'm surrounded by family."
