English blues and rock singer Joe Cocker has died at age 70. "He brought Ray Charles to the mix as an influence on rock & roll," E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt once raved.
Cocker is most famous for his soulful covers of popular songs (including some Beatles classics), and for his electrifying performance at Woodstock. Here are a few of his live performances you might have missed:
"Watching the River Flow"
In 1983, Cocker was part of a Who's Who of British rockers—including Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck—who did a series of benefit concerts for Action into Research for Multiple Sclerosis. This performance of Bob Dylan's 1971 blues tune features Clapton on guitar.
"Goin' Down Slow"
Cocker and Elton John duetted on this blues cover on French music show Trafic Musique in 2005.
"You Are So Beautiful"
To celebrate the iconic Apollo Theater's 50th Anniversary in 1985, Cocker was joined by Lady Marmalade herself, Patti Labelle, in a cover of his 1975 hit single. On piano was legendary session man Billy Preston, who co-wrote and recorded the original version one year before Cocker's.
