A Walkerton, Indiana, pizza shop is the stateās first business to declare it will not service gay weddings after the Religious Freedom Restoration Act was signed into law last week. āIf a gay couple came in and wanted us to provide pizzas for their wedding, we would have to say no,ā Memories Pizzaās Crystal OāConnor told a local news station. āWe are a Christian establishment.ā However, gay couplesālike those of other faithsāare welcome to patronize the establishment on non-matrimonial occasions. āI donāt think itās discrimination,ā she told the news station. āItās supposed to help people that have a religious belief.ā
When contacted by The Daily Beast, Memories Pizza owner Kevin OāConnor said he didnāt expect the statements to become a national story when the local news crew walked into his shop to ask questions Wednesday.
āI donāt have a problem with gay people. I do not condone gay marriage and thatās what I said,ā he said. āI donāt turn anybody away from the store, I donāt have a problem with gay people. I just donāt condone the marriage.ā
OāConnor said heās never been asked to cater a wedding, and that the response was hypothetical in response to questions posed by the news crew.
āItās hard to speak when things get taken so out of context and this thing goes sky high and just blows everything up,ā he said. āIāve got a family to think about, too.ā
OāConnor also said that he had never been faced with a conflict with his religious beliefs in his line of work.
āI mean, we donāt believe in murder. I also donāt believe in abortion,ā he said when asked about other events he would feel conflicted about providing services for. When asked about pizza for weddings with divorced couples, OāConnor paused.
āYou know, thatās something that I donāt have figured out in my own mind yet,ā he said. āBecause Iām divorced. So thatās something I donāt have figured out.ā
