Indiana Pizzeria: No Pies for Gay Weddings

YUCK

A self-described Christian businessman won't cater same-sex ceremoniesā€”not that he has a problem with gays, he says.

A Walkerton, Indiana, pizza shop is the stateā€™s first business to declare it will not service gay weddings after the Religious Freedom Restoration Act was signed into law last week. ā€œIf a gay couple came in and wanted us to provide pizzas for their wedding, we would have to say no,ā€ Memories Pizzaā€™s Crystal Oā€™Connor told a local news station. ā€œWe are a Christian establishment.ā€ However, gay couplesā€”like those of other faithsā€”are welcome to patronize the establishment on non-matrimonial occasions. ā€œI donā€™t think itā€™s discrimination,ā€ she told the news station. ā€œItā€™s supposed to help people that have a religious belief.ā€

When contacted by The Daily Beast, Memories Pizza owner Kevin Oā€™Connor said he didnā€™t expect the statements to become a national story when the local news crew walked into his shop to ask questions Wednesday.

ā€œI donā€™t have a problem with gay people. I do not condone gay marriage and thatā€™s what I said,ā€ he said. ā€œI donā€™t turn anybody away from the store, I donā€™t have a problem with gay people. I just donā€™t condone the marriage.ā€

Oā€™Connor said heā€™s never been asked to cater a wedding, and that the response was hypothetical in response to questions posed by the news crew.

ā€œItā€™s hard to speak when things get taken so out of context and this thing goes sky high and just blows everything up,ā€ he said. ā€œIā€™ve got a family to think about, too.ā€

Oā€™Connor also said that he had never been faced with a conflict with his religious beliefs in his line of work.

ā€œI mean, we donā€™t believe in murder. I also donā€™t believe in abortion,ā€ he said when asked about other events he would feel conflicted about providing services for. When asked about pizza for weddings with divorced couples, Oā€™Connor paused.

ā€œYou know, thatā€™s something that I donā€™t have figured out in my own mind yet,ā€ he said. ā€œBecause Iā€™m divorced. So thatā€™s something I donā€™t have figured out.ā€
