Is there something in the air? Of late, celebrities have been getting very fired up over awards shows that nobody cares about. First it was the ESPYs, which provoked the ire of many a transphobe when Caitlyn Jenner was awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Now, a pair of super rich people are squabbling over the MTV VMAs—a gaudy spectacle that lost all relevancy back when Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” upset Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for Video of the Year.
On Tuesday, the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards nominations were announced, and Nicki Minaj’s batshit “Anaconda” video, a glorious symphony of butt shots, was cruelly passed over for a coveted Video of the Year nod. Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” video, an insane dystopian saga packed with Kendrick Lamar and many of TayTay’s model-hot friends—Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, etc.—did receive a Video of the Year nod.
Nicki was not happy, and seemed to fire a cryptic shot at Taylor, who then responded in kind:
There was more back-and-forth between the two, leading to Swift offering an olive branch of sorts. But the best part of this whole ridiculous kerfuffle is it awoke the sleeping giant that is Kim Kardashian, who weighed in with the following tweet (which she's since deleted):
If you’ll recall, Kim’s husband, the great Kanye West, crashed the stage at the 2009 MTV VMAs as Swift was collecting her Best Female Video award for “You Belong with Me”—a moonman trophy that should have gone to Beyoncé for “Single Ladies.”
“Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you and I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!” announced West.
