On Thursday night, Nicki Minaj’s boyfriend Meek Mill finally retaliated against Drake, releasing the diss track “Wanna Know” on Funkmaster Flex’s radio show.
Boasting a litany of sophomoric, barely coherent lines, it landed with a resounding thud, as the Internet collectively wondered, “It took this dude a whole week to cook this up?”
“I just wanna know / If you ain’t write that runnin’ through the 6 shit / Tell us who was Quentin runnin’ through the 6 with,” raps Meek, before the track segues to an interlude sampling songwriter Quentin Miller’s reference track for Drake’s “Know Yourself,” a song off his fourth album, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.
There are also plenty of violent threats against Drizzy’s family (“We the type of niggas tie your mother up / Fuck your sister in the ass and hit your brother up, pussy / You really sweet, I’ll call you Buttercup”) and an echoing voice calling him “Milli Vanilli.”
If you haven’t been keeping tabs on the most amusingly hilarious rap rivalry in ages, back on July 21, Meek went on a Twitter tantrum, claiming that Drake doesn’t write his own raps—including on the Meek track he guested on, “R.I.C.O.”
Nobody knows why Meek decided to go in on Drake, but he did whine in his tweets about Drake—who has 24.7 million Twitter followers to Meek’s 4.94 million—not tweeting about his new album.
So Drake, not one to take things lying down, released a pair of diss tracks aimed at Meek Mill over the past several days. The first, “Charged Up,” was a bit more subtle, but the follow-up, “Back to Back Freestyle,” laid complete waste to Mr. Nicki Minaj with lines like, “Is that a world tour, or your girl’s tour?” and “Shout to all my boss bitches wifin’ niggas!”
If that weren’t enough, the song featured cover art of one of the most famous moments in baseball history: Toronto Blue Jays star Joe Carter celebrating after crushing a walk-off home run to win the 1993 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, giving Toronto back-to-back (get it?) championships. Drake is from Toronto and Meek Mill is from Philadelphia. And “Back to Back Freestyle” has not only been streamed more than 10 million times since it went live early Wednesday morning, but it also led to a series of hilarious memes of Drake clowning Meek Mill under the hashtag #BackToBack, which was trending all day Wednesday.
DJ Funkmaster Flex has also completely lost his mind over the beef, releasing a series of “reference tracks” by artists who’ve contributed to Drake songs, including Miller—despite the fact that Miller wrote a candid explainer on his Tumblr communicating how grateful he was that Drake plucked him from a bakery to help him work on some tracks, and how he isn’t Drake’s ghostwriter and “could never take credit for anything other than the few songs we worked on together.”
