Toss-ups in the schoolyard are pretty common for teenagers, often ending with fellow students or teachers separating the combatants and some detention being doled out, maybe after a split lip or black eye to accentuate the battered egos. And while there is no question that fighting is dumb, and should be disciplined, there is also such a thing as going way, way too far.
In this video, reportedly filmed by a student at Rockdale County High School in Georgia, we see teens arguing before the squabble devolves into a boxing match. It looks like the pair could easily be separated by an adult simply stepping between them, but that’s not the tack the interceding police officer decides to take.
Running in from behind, the officer, who is white, immediately discharges his Taser, pumping tens of thousands of volts of electricity into school-aged kids. He holds the charge, standing over their fallen bodies before another officer appears on the scene.
That two trained policemen couldn’t have managed to break up a teen’s playground altercation without resorting to potentially lethal action is shocking, no pun intended. Rockdale County most recently made national news when the KKK left bags of candy and racist fliers on residents’ lawns in the wake of the Charleston church shooting over the summer.
