Donald Trump has climbed to the top of the GOP heap by promising to build a Fortress America. In Tuesday night’s debate, Trump’s distant rival Jeb Bush argued that he was more of a wrecking ball.
From the moment he got a chance to answer a question, Jeb Bush targeted what little ire he could muster into an attack on the GOP frontrunner including a new moniker: “chaos candidate.”
“This is not a serious proposal,” Bush said in response to a question about Trump’s now infamous declaration that all Muslims should be banned from the United States. “He’s a chaos candidate,” Bush surmised. “He’d be a chaos president. He would not be the commander-in-chief we need to keep our country safe.”
Trump, in what has become his signature style of psychological warfare, suggested that Bush didn’t really mean what he had said but was only doing so because he is failing in the polls.
“Jeb doesn’t really believe I’m unhinged,” Trump said referring to Bush’s immediate tweet in reaction to his proposed Muslim embargo. “He said that simply because he’s failed in this campaign. It’s been a total disaster,” Trump said as Bush awkwardly winced.
“Nobody cares and frankly I’m the most solid person up here. I built a tremendous company and all I want to do is make America great again,” Trump said plugging his own brand before reiterating that Jeb didn’t believe in his own insults.
Bush tried to stay on message, retreating from the verbal strongman tactics.
“Banning all Muslims will make it harder for us to do exactly what we need to do, which is to destroy terrorists,” Bush pivoted. “Under President Obama we have created this standard that is so high that it’s impossible to be successful in fighting ISIS. We need to engage with the Arab world to make this happen. It’s not a serious proposal to say to the people you’re asking for their support that they can’t even come to the country to engage in a dialogue with us. That’s not a serious proposal. We need a serious leader to deal with this and I believe I’m that guy.”
Unfortunately for Bush, many Americans disagree.
