“For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a famous plus-size model,” a confidently awkward Amy Schumer said at the top of her interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Tuesday night.
The comedian was referring to a recent Glamour magazine cover that listed her along with Melissa McCarthy, Adele, and “plus-size” model Ashley Graham, implying the four shared something in common.
“I think there’s nothing wrong with being plus-size. Beautiful healthy women,” Schumer wrote in an Instagram post about the cover, noting that while plus-size is typically considered to be size 16 and up, she goes between a 6 and an 8. She accused the magazine for putting her “in their plus-size only issue without asking or letting me know and it doesn’t feel right to me.”
“Young girls seeing my body type thinking that is plus size,” she added. “What are your thoughts? Mine are not cool glamour not glamourous.
“I love Glamour magazine. Honestly, they’ve been so nice to me, they’ve done so many great things for women,” Schumer told Fallon on Tuesday. “But what I learned is that people really don’t like being classified by plus-sized. We don’t need these labels. We don’t need them.”
When Fallon changed the subject to talk about her relatively new boyfriend, Ben Hanisch, Schumer instantly lit up. “We’re great. We’re really good. We met and like totally fell in love.” But she’s still trying to figure out why their relationship became “viral Internet news.”
“I think because he’s really cute and I think people were like, what? He has all his teeth?” she continued, self-deprecatingly. “People were shocked. They were shocked!
“I met his whole family. They’re great,” Schumer said. “And I told them, journalists are going to call you because it’s what they do. And they’re going to come to the house, and they did. And his family is so nice. They live in Illinois. His mom is the most excited person you’ll ever meet in your life.”
Schumer told Hanisch’s mother Deb to just say “no comment” to anyone who asked her about their relationship and she said no problem. “Not even 10 minutes later, I get a Google alert that says Time magazine that Deb was like, ‘I’ve never heard of her before in my life.’”
Actually, Mrs. Hanisch told Time, “I think she’s terrific. She’s so sweet. But I haven’t talked to her yet. I don’t know her at all, and I had never really heard of the name before all this.”
It does seem, however, that Schumer’s relationship may be influencing her sketch show. Before cutting to commercial, Fallon shared a new clip from Season Four of Inside Amy Schumer that features the comedian singing a song about the societal expectations for women to embrace their boyfriend’s interests.
