A new book which claims to detail the complex three-way relationship between the queen, Camilla Parker Bowles, and Kate Middleton claims that Camilla was behind William and Kate’s brief split in 2007.
Christopher Andersen—the New York Times-bestselling author of titles such as William and Kate and The Day Diana Died—claims that Camilla told her husband, Prince Charles, to urge his son to drop Kate.
Andersen says that Camilla was “disgusted” with the pair “sucking up all the attention” as she tried to win over the public following Princess Diana’s death.
The sensational allegations—which are being dismissed out of hand by royal sources—are made in his new book, Game of Crowns.
The author also claims that Camilla was working with spin doctors, “leaking self-aggrandizing stories to the press and sniping at perceived foes.”
The book also claims that the queen was against Charles marrying Camilla, whom Diana referred to as “the Rottweiler.”
Andersen’s book also explores some fascinating (if better known) stories such as Camilla’s chat-up line to Prince Charles (“My great-grandmother and your great-great-grandfather were lovers. So how about it?”) and Camilla’s involvement in selecting Diana to marry Charles.
Andersen also writes about Diana’s heated confrontations with Camilla:
“Camilla,” she said, “I would just like you to know that I know exactly what is going on between you and Charles. I wasn’t born yesterday.”
Camilla, Andersen writes, stood her ground, demanding to know why Diana refused to simply look the other way.
“You’ve got everything you ever wanted,” she said pleadingly. “You’ve got all the men in the world to fall in love with you and you’ve got two beautiful children. What more do you want?”
Taken aback by Camilla’s impudence, Diana shouted back, “I want my husband.”
He also covers Carole Middleton’s allegedly exhaustive efforts to put her daughter in the future king’s bed.
When William decided on a university, Andersen writes, Carole “flew to Florence to persuade Kate in person that St. Andrews offered something no other university in the world offered: proximity to the future King of England.”
Andersen is a prolific author, having penned 32 books, including Mick: The Wild Life and Mad Genius of Jagger to mark the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones in July 2012 and a book about the relationship of President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, These Few Precious Days: The Final Year of Jack with Jackie.
