LeBron James fears what might happen to his 12-year-old son in an interaction with police, the NBA Finals MVP told reporters on Monday.

“It’s a scary-ass situation,” James said at the Cleveland Cavaliers’ media day, “that if my son calls me and says he’s been pulled over, that I’m not that confident that things are going to go well and my son is going to return home.”

James added the caveat that he was not condemning all police, and also said he will continue to stand for the National Anthem at sports events—though he said he respects football player Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to do so.

“I’m all in favor of anyone, athlete or non-athlete, being able to express what they believe in in a peaceful manner,” James said, “and that’s exactly what Colin Kaepernick is doing.”

But the star Cavaliers player said repeatedly that recent videos of police shootings have made him scared for his child.

“It’s tough being a parent right now, when you have a pre-teen,” James said.
