One night after he tore into Donald Trump for threatening to confront Hillary Clinton with her husband’s infidelities, Stephen Colbert was at it again, this time taking on the Republican candidate’s rediscovered history of “fat-shaming” women who don’t meet his lofty standards.
In a post-debate rally, Trump explained away his poor performance at the first debate by saying he didn’t want to “embarrass” Clinton. “And it’s true, he did nothing to embarrass her,” Colbert said. “Trump’s always acting like such a gentleman. He holds doors for women, gives them a seat on the bus, does no debate preparation. You might call it the addled ramblings of a delusional demagogue, Trump calls it chivalry.”
“And one of the things that especially did not embarrass Secretary Clinton on Monday is her charge that Donald Trump says abusive things about women, including one former Miss Universe.” That woman, Alicia Machado, has come out strongly in favor of Clinton and, more importantly, against Trump over the past two days.
“Now, these comments could really hurt Trump with the small, special interest group of Americans who gain weight,” Colbert joked. Trump has since defended himself by saying Machado’s weight gain was a “real problem.” To which the host replied, “See? It wasn’t fat-shaming, because she was fat.”
“It’s all part of Trump's new campaign slogan: ‘Trump 2016: Seriously, ladies, you could lose a few pounds,’” Colbert joked. Meanwhile, the host pointed out that Trump, who weighs at least 236 pounds, is “technically obese.”
