As has become the new normal, Seth Meyers had a lot of crazy to catch up on in his Monday night edition of “A Closer Look.” Among the topics he tackled were President Trump’s bizarre trip to Mar-a-Lago with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, National Security Adviser Mike Flynn’s possibly illegal conversations with Russia, and, of course, the administration’s persistent voter-fraud lies.
After knocking Trump for openly discussing North Korea policy with Abe while members of his Florida club listened in from nearby tables, Meyers moved on to the “crisis within his own government” surrounding Flynn’s pre-inauguration chats with Russia’s ambassador about U.S. sanctions. A White House aide said Flynn claims to have “no recollection of discussing sanctions” but “couldn’t be certain if the topic came up.”
“He talked to the Russian ambassador five times, but couldn’t be certain if they talked about Russian sanctions?” Meyers asked. “That’s like me saying I talked to Serena Williams on the phone five times but I can’t say for sure whether or not anyone mentioned tennis.” (Late Night was taped hours before Flynn submitted his resignation Monday night.)
Regarding an interview in mid-January in which Vice President Mike Pence said he spoke with Gen. Flynn and that the sanctions were not discussed, Meyers said, “Either Flynn straight-up lied to Mike Pence or Mike Pence lied to us. But of course, to Mike Pence, a lie is just a truth that hasn’t gone through conversion therapy yet.”
But perhaps the most disturbing news to come out of this weekend is the fact that Trump and his spokespeople are still pushing the “deranged conspiracy theory that millions of people voted illegally in the 2016 election.”
“The president of the United States thinks thousands of people were bused in from Massachusetts to illegally vote in New Hampshire?” Meyers asked, quoting his most recent assertions. “I’m from New Hampshire and I can tell you we’d notice if thousands of people from Massachusetts showed up on buses. That’s the invasion we’re most afraid of.”
Who did the Trump administration send to the Sunday show to defend Trump’s “wild conspiracy theories without actually offering any evidence?” White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller.
“Yeah, that’s a guy who’s definitely lying,” Meyers said after playing the clip of Miller on ABC News’ This Week with George Stephanopoulos. “In case you’re wondering what being sinister does to you, that guy is 31 years old and he already looks like he’s two-thirds of the way to Montgomery Burns.”
