Amidst an uproar from conservatives on Twitter for CBS to #FireColbert for a joke that has been perceived as homophobic in reference to Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, Stephen Colbert turned his attention to Hillary Clinton Tuesday night.
As Clinton told Christiane Amanpour in a new interview Tuesday, she believes she would have won the 2016 presidential election had FBI Director James Comey never released his infamous last-minute letter to Congress raising new doubts about her private email server.
And on the “coincidence” that John Podesta’s hacked emails hit WikiLeaks, by way of Russia, on the same day Trump’s Access Hollywood tape come out, Clinton added, “You just can’t make this stuff up.”

“Actually, you can make up whatever you want,” Stephen Colbert said in his monologue. “Have you met our current president?”

“But Hillary may have accidentally revealed why she really lost,” Colbert continued, pointing to her slip of the tongue in stating the the election was held on Oct. 28 instead of Nov. 8. “That explains everything,” the host said, imagining Clinton packing up her things on Oct. 29 and deciding not to campaign in Michigan and Wisconsin.
Despite her assertions about what caused her to lose in the end, Clinton also told Amanpour, “I take absolutely personal responsibility. I was the candidate. I was the person who was on the ballot.”
“So she made mistakes, publicly recognized them, and owned up to her shortcomings,” Colbert said. “No wonder she lost, that’s totally unpresidential.”
