The Victims of the Manchester Terror Attack

A terrorist attack on an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England on Monday night killed at least 22 people and injured more than 59, according to police. Young people, many of them girls, are among those feared dead. The first victims have been identified, so far ranging in age from 8 to 51.

Georgina Bethany Callander, 18, studied health and social care at Runshaw College in Lancashire. Friends described her as a “kind soul” and a “living angel, the sweetest person you ever did meet.” She loved Disney movies and was a fan of Grande’s, whom she had previously met. Callander reportedly died in the hospital with her mother at her bedside.

Saffie Rose Roussos, 8, was attending the concert with her mother, Lisa, and older sister, Ashlee. Both Saffie’s mother and sister survived the attack and are reportedly being treated for injuries. She attended Tarleton Community Primary School in Lancashire. “Saffie was simply a beautiful little girl in every aspect of the word,” principal Chris Upton said.

John Atkinson, 26, was killed while leaving the arena. He studied health and social at Bury College, and was remembered by friends and family as an “amazing young man.” Atkinson's friends expressed their condolences on Facebook, where one friend wrote, “Sleep tight John Atkinson. Thoughts and prayers with all your family and the other 21 people who lost there lives last night."

Olivia Campbell, 15, had gone to the show with her friend Adam to celebrate his birthday. Her stepfather said she liked to sing. Campbell had called her mother before Ariana Grande started performing to tell her how happy she was to be there. “She thanked me and said she loved me and that was the last I heard from her,” Campbell’s mother said earlier Tuesday. Her mother and stepfather spent frantic hours trying to get information about where she was—sending out descriptions of her on Facebook and Twitter. Her mother posted a status on Facebook on Tuesday saying: “RIP my darling precious gorgeous girl Olivia Campbell taken far far too soon go sing with the angels and keep smiling mummy loves you so much.”

Kelly Brewster, 32, was attending the concert with her sister and her young niece. After the blast, Brewster shielded her niece, Hollie, from the blast. Brewster and her boyfriend, Ian Winslow, had put a down payment on a house the day before the concert. Winslow confirmed his girlfriend’s death last night on Facebook. “Kelly really was the happiest she has ever been and we had so many things planned together,” he wrote. “My daughter Phoebe will be absolutely devastated like we all are. Love you loads X”

Martyn Hett, 29, was a PR manager with a large online following and love of the British television show Coronation Street. He became a minor online celebrity in the UK in 2015 after getting a tattoo of one of the show’s characters, Deidre Barlow, on his ankle. His friend, Russell Hayward, described him as “iconic and beautiful.” Last year, Hett made headlines once again after tweeting about how his mother, an artisan, hadn’t sold anything at a craft fair—shortly afterwards, his large online following bought out her store. “He left this world exactly how he lived, centre of attention,” Hayward said of Hett.

Marcin and Angelika Kils were waiting for their daughters, Alex and Patricia, outside the arena. The couple, originally from Poland, took a selfie just a few hours before going to the concert to pick up their daughters. The BBC reported that their daughter Alex shared the photo on social media after the attack, writing “Anyone who is in [a]ny safe place or hospital in Manchester, if anyone comes across my parents please please let me know as they've been missing ever since the attack, this is a picture taken tonight so this is exactly what they were wearing.”

Michelle Kiss, 45, was attending the concert with her 12-year-old daughter, Millie. Kiss ran a scaffolding business with her husband, Tony, and had recently started a class at Salford University. On the night of the concert, she posted a picture of her daughter and a friend captioned “Excited girlies ready to watch Ariana.” The family confirmed her death on Wednesday, writing “Michelle Kiss was a loving wife to Tony, mother to Dylan, Elliot and Millie, as well as daughter to Mick and Christine and sister to Nichola. “Family was her life and we are all obviously devastated by her loss. She has been taken away from us, and all that love her, in the most traumatic way imaginable.”

Nell Jones, 14, was at the concert with her friend Freya Lewis. Lewis survived the blast but was seriously injured, the Manchester Evening News reports. Jones was a student at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive and Sixth Form, and the school’s principal described her as a popular, friendly student. “Nell was a very popular girl, always smiling, always positive. Her tutor group have been together since the transition from primary school. It feels like they have lost a sister not a classmate,” a former teacher said of Jones. “Nell’s family are devastated by the news and have asked that they be allowed to come to terms with their loss in private,” he added.

Jane Tweddle-Taylor, 51, was a receptionist at South Shore Academy. The night of the concert, she had dinner with a friend before going to the arena to pick up her daughter and her friends from the concert. Her husband, Mark Taylor, told the BBC she was a “very good mother to three daughters” and “liked by everyone” at South Shore Academy. “Jane was a well-loved member of the staff,” South Shore principal Jane Bailey said in a statement. “We have received numerous messages of condolences from parents, students, community members and colleagues across Blackpool for which we are very grateful. All of them say the same things about our lovely Jane.... bubbly, kind, welcoming, funny, generous..... the list goes on.”

Lisa Lees, 47, and Alison Howe, 45, were waiting for their daughters in the arena’s foyer when they were killed. Both women’s daughters are safe, the BBC reports. “They took a caring beautiful mum and stepmother away from us all,” Howe’s stepson, Jordan, wrote on Facebook. Lisa’s brother, Lee Hunter, confirmed her death on Facebook, writing, “For those of you who don’t know Lisa is gone but never, ever forgotten. I love you Lisa, I’ll miss you so much.”
