Jon Stewart Weighs In on Nikki Glaser’s Golden Globes Monologue

Jon Stewart offered his thoughts on Nikki Glaser’s opening remarks Sunday night, taking to X to share that he thinks the roast comedian is “very, very good at this.” Glaser took on some of the biggest names in the crowd during this year’s Globes, even drawing laughs from the audience with a couple Diddy jokes. She earned a pat on the back from Stewart, who hosted the Oscars twice in 2006 and 2008, and declared it “the worst” job he’s ever had—but he seems to think Glaser was handling her hosting gig with excellent flair. In 2014, he told Seth Macfarlane on The Daily Show that “I [hosted the second time] because they thought, like in golf, ‘Boy that first shot sucked, do you want to hit again?’” That second time didn’t go so well either, as the show received some of its lowest ratings ever in 2008. Glaser, on the other hand, is racking up rave reviews.

President Joe Biden angrily snapped at reporters when asked a question about his age Sunday following a White House event to celebrate the signing of the Social Security Fairness Act into law. “My being the oldest president, I know more world leaders than any one of you ever met in your whole goddamn life,” Biden said. This is not the first time the president has snapped at reporters, with a November 2024 incident seeing the president tell a reporter “Do you think you can keep from getting hit in the head by a camera behind you?” after being asked whether or not he could reach a hostage deal between Israel and Hamas by the end of his term. The president also reportedly became agitated when asked about his past comments about his successor, President-elect Donald Trump, being a potential “threat” to democracy. “I think what he did was a genuine threat to democracy,” Biden said.

Emma Stone debuted a dramatic new look for the 2025 Golden Globes Sunday night. Stepping out onto the red carpet, Stone showed off a brand new pixie cut for the first time, seemingly confirming fan speculation that she had shaved off her hair for a new film. In October last year, Stone was seen filming Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film Bugonia, where she was pictured wearing a hat tight on her head, sparking rumors that she had cut off all her hair for the undisclosed role. The actress paired her new hairdo with a custom strapless red gown and satin bow from Louis Vuitton Sunday night. While Stone is not nominated for an award this year, she attended as the reigning winner of the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) category where she won the coveted award last year for her performance in Lanthimos’ Poor Things.

Mike Rinder, the former senior Church of Scientology executive who quit the controversial organization and became one of its most scathing critics, died after suffering from cancer, his family announced Sunday. “If you are reading this, I have shuffled off this mortal coil in accordance with the immutable law that there are only two certainties in life: death and taxes,” reads a farewell message from Rinder, 69, shared in an Instagram post. As the executive director of Scientology’s Office of Special Affairs, the Australia native oversaw the organization’s legal affairs and public relations for a quarter of a century, often launching aggressive and brazen public relations attacks on journalists and ex-members. After leaving Scientology in the late 2000s, Rinder became increasingly critical of the organization and its leader, David Miscavage, alleging widespread corruption and harassment within its ranks—Scientology has always denied his claims and accused him of being a disgruntled former member. From 2016 to 2019, Rinder cohosted the A&E documentary series Scientology and the Aftermath with actress and former Scientologist Leah Remini. He was also a prominent podcaster and penned a 2022 memoir, A Billion Years, about his time in the organization. “My only real regret is not having achieved what I said I wanted to—ending the abuses of Scientology, especially disconnection and seeing [his son] Jack into adulthood,“ Rinder said, in the statement shared by his family “If you are in any way fighting to end those abuses please keep the flag flying — never give up.”

The New Orleans attacker who killed 14 people and injured 35 on New Year’s Day used Meta smart glasses to plot out the attack months in advance, officials said on Sunday. Shamsud-Din Jabbar visited the city twice in the months leading up to the attack and recorded Bourbon Street with the glasses while biking through the area, the FBI said. Jabbar was wearing the glasses throughout the attack, but he did not activate them that day, according to CNN. Jabbar was killed in a shootout with police after he drove a pickup truck through the crowd and opened fire on the street, killing 14 people. Jabbar, 42, was a former U.S. Army veteran who had pledged allegiance to ISIS, and the attack only occurred after he had changed his mind about killing his own family.

Mufasa continues to dominate Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in the first box office weekend of the new year. The Disney prequel sat at No. 1 in domestic box office sales for the second weekend in a row, raking in $24 million and showing in 3,925 North American theaters. Overall, the film has grossed $168 million domestically, with worldwide sales at $476 million globally. Sonic 3 was just behind but failed to speed past Mufasa, grossing $21.2 million from 3,746 theaters. So far, the third movie adaptation of the video game raised $187.5 million domestically and $336 million worldwide, with a $122 million production. And yes, a follow-up is already in the works. Other movies are sailing far behind the two family-friendly films, but worth mentioning: Nosferatu, the highly-anticipated Dracula remake, received $13.2 million in its second weekend at the box office, showing at 3,132 venues, according to Variety. Meanwhile, Moana 2 received $12.3 million in its sixth weekend, with Wicked grossing $10.2 million in its seventh.

Filmmaker Jeff Baena’s brother shared a heartbreaking message following the director’s apparent suicide in Los Angeles Friday. Under a tribute from comedian and actor Adam Pally, Baena’s brother, Brad Baena, commented on the tragic loss. “I am broken,” wrote user @bradbaena79. Pally liked the comment. In his own post, Pally sent condolences to Baena’s wife, comedian Aubrey Plaza, and the rest of his family. “My heart breaks for my friend Aubrey and the Baena family and for all of us who spent time on his sets or at his house or in...his orbit,” he wrote. “Thank you for believing in my Jeff, may your memory be a blessing.” Pally also shared memories with the filmmaker, calling him a “sweet Jewish boy from Miami.” “He was a talented director with impeccable taste and vision, he was a connector of people, a fosterer of possibility, the guy who knows where the best restaurant was no matter where you were,” Pally wrote. Baena was found dead by an assistant Friday morning at his home. TMZ reported that the cause of death for the 47-year-old was suicide. Plaza has yet to comment on her husband’s death, and is scheduled as a presenter for the Golden Globes on Sunday night. According to Deadline, his family asked for privacy, and said that they were “devastated.”

Nicole Kidman revealed her ballsy pre-filming ritual that shocked the likes of Meryl Streep. Kidman, the 57-year-old actress who has starred in films like Big Little Lies, The Perfect Couple, and most recently, Babygirl, spoke about her routine before stepping on set. “I can’t start something feeling like I’m on the back foot,” Kidman told the Guardian in an interview. “And when I’m actually filming a lot of times, if there’s an ocean, I’ll go and get in the ocean, even if it’s five in the morning. Because I love to put the saltwater on my body, even if it’s for five seconds. Even better if it’s cold.” When filming with Meryl Streep for Big Little Lies in northern California, the habit shocked her colleague. “I loved having a quick dip up in Monterey when we were doing Big Little Lies," Kidman said. “Meryl Streep would be like: “You did not just go in the ocean then.” And it’s the Pacific, so it’s really cold.“ She also divulged that when shooting in Cape Cod for The Perfect Couple, there was an ocean with a “massive shark sign” telling visitors not to swim. Kidman would ignore the warning. “I wasn’t swimming laps, but I just love putting my head under.”
