Obama Urges New Era of Civility

President Obama addressed more than 14,000 people Wednesday at a memorial service at the University of Arizona in Tucson, urging civility in the wake of the shooting rampage that killed six and wounded 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. “We can be better,” Obama said. Obama praised the people who rushed to the scene of the shooting Saturday; the two men who wrestled suspect Jared Loughner to the ground and the intern who rushed to Rep. Giffords’ side. Obama visited Giffords prior to the memorial, and said she opened her eyes for the first time earlier Wednesday, as he told the crowd Giffords “knows we are here, she knows we love her, and she knows we are rooting for her.” Giffords’ husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, attended Wednesday’s service at the University of Arizona, seated in the front row.
