Well, that’s awkward. Even as Republicans bash the Affordable Care Act and argue that the mandate that Americans either hold insurance or pay a penalty is an "unprecedented" assault on individual freedom, it turns out the GOP budget—proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan and based on his “Roadmap for America’s Future—would also have an individual mandate. While the structure is slightly different, both plans would have the same result: a lower tax bill for people who hold health insurance. Several lawsuits, most of them brought by GOP politicians on the state level, have challenged the constitutionality of the individual mandate, but it looks as though an expected Supreme Court decision might have an impact on more than just Obamacare.
