Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon drew a large holiday-weekend crowd away from the beach and into movie theaters, making it the highest-grossing Fourth of July–weekend opening ever. The third installment of Bay’s Transformers series brought in an estimated $97.5 million and grossed $180 million total since it hit theaters last Tuesday. The film easily surpassed the previous opening-weekend record set by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which is still in theaters.
