At least 48 people were shot over Labor Day weekend in New York City. The final incident on Monday took place after the West Indian Day Parade: After a fistfight, Leroy Webster shot and killed Eusi Johnson. A stray bullet also struck and killed an innocent bystander, Denise Gay before police shot and killed Webster. Addressing the spate of violence, Mayor Mike Bloomberg blamed federal gun laws. "It was a senseless murder and another painful reminder of of how federal officials fail to take the problem of gun violence seriously," he said. "It is a matter of life and death and in this case, the death was of an innocent New Yorker."
