Herman Cain probably did not realize he was being filmed when he made a joke about Anita Hill today. Still, a politician attempting to dispel sexual-harassment charges probably shouldn’t joke about the woman who made similar accusations against Clarence Thomas who, at the time, was about to be confirmed as a Supreme Court justice. In Thursday’s exchange, which was caught by a Fox News camera in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Cain responded jokingly to a person in the crowd who mentioned Ms. Hill, “Is she going to endorse me?” Cain’s spokesman said the quip “was a joke,” one that comes in the midst of several sexual- harassment accusations and Cain’s reference during last night’s GOP debate to former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi as “Princess Nancy”—for which he later apologized.
