Hillary Clinton’s motorcade drove through a barrage of tomatoes and shoes thrown by angry protesters yelling “Monica, Monica, Monica,” as she left the new U.S. Consulate in Alexandria, Egypt, Monday. The U.S. Secretary of State had been in Egypt to challenge accusations that the U.S. government has taken sides in the Middle Eastern country’s recent political turmoil, but clearly many citizens weren’t buying it. “I want to be clear that the United States is not in the business, in Egypt, of choosing winners and losers, even if we could, which, of course, we cannot,” she said at the consulate’s reopening ceremony. “I have come to Alexandria to reaffirm the strong support of the United States for the Egyptian people and for their democratic future.”
