Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of slain Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, wants his day in the International Criminal Court, rather than closer to home. The ICC has issued warrants for him and the head of Libyan intelligence, accusing both of crimes against humanity stemming from the Gaddafi regime’s response to last year’s revolution. But the Libyan government, which is currently holding him in custody, has other plans, hoping to try Gaddafi before a Libyan court. Gaddafi’s thoughts on the matter are clear: “The only way for Libya and the Libyan people to have justice is for the ICC to try this case in a fair, impartial and independent manner,” he is quoted as saying in a court document. The case has been messy for the ICC—five of its staffers, including Gaddafi’s lawyer, were recently held in Libya for almost a month after visiting him.
