Les Misérables is doing better at the box office than expected, securing the titles of best opening for a musical and second-best Christmas Day opening ever. Still, much like that of the character played by Anne Hathaway, the film adaptation of the Broadway hit’s dream of staying at No. 1 is over. Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained—luring in much larger female audiences than expected—has soared past Les Mis to the No. 2 spot with a box-office total of $64 million in the six days since it opened. At No. 1 for the third weekend in a row, however, is Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, having grossed $222.7 million in North America alone and $600 million worldwide.
