The United Nations said Monday that sarin gas had definitely been used in a Damascus suburb in Syria on August 21, but the report stopped short of actually naming which side ordered the chemical weapons attack—although it could provide some key clues. The U.N. concluded there is “clear and convincing evidence” that the nerve gas, which is against the Geneva Protocol, was used. Who is at fault for the deadly attack has caused bitter divisions in the U.N.: the U.S. has insisted President Bashar al-Assad’s forces were behind it, while Russia and Syria have insisted the rebels were responsible. An estimated 1,400 people were killed in the attack, including children.
