Three gunfights left 13 people dead in the Mexican city of Matamoros, just across the U.S. border from Brownsville, Texas. Two of the shootouts were between gunmen and police, and a woman had been killed earlier in clashes between unidentified armed groups. Drug cartels in the past few years have tried to gain access to border routes to the U.S., leading to shootings and executions along the border route.
