A new study in Scientific Reports explains for the first time how horned frogs are able to catch, lift and eat enormous prey. Horned frogs eat insects, but also lizards, snakes, rodents, other frogs and small birds by using the adhesive force (via their tongue) of 1.4 times their body weight on average. “Translated into human dimensions,” study co-author Thomas Kleinteich said, “that would be an 80-kilogram [176-pound] person lifting 112 kilograms [246 pounds] just by using his or her tongue. And they do this within milliseconds” of making contact.
