89-Year-Old Auschwitz Guard Arrested

Johann Breyer, 89, is now the oldest person ever accused of ties to the Nazi regime by the U.S. after being arrested Tuesday at his Philadelphia home. Breyer is accused of being an SS guard at the age of 17 at Auschwitz and Buchenwald, where hundreds of thousands of Jews were slaughtered. Breyer emigrated to the U.S. in 1952, but Germany is asking that he be extradited to face 158 counts of aiding and abetting Nazis. Breyer claims his service was “involuntary.” He was first charged in 1992, but was allowed to stay in the U.S. under claims he was a U.S. citizen, as his mother was born in the U.S.
