Soldier Kills Herself at Ft. Lee

A female solider died of a self-inflicted gunshot at the U.S. Army base at Fort Lee, Virginia. “We are sad for our solider in arms that she faced those types of challenges that she thought she had to resort to those kind of actions,” said Maj. Gen. Stephen Lyons. The U.S. Army said the soldier barricaded herself in an office and shot herself in the head with a non-service weapon while law-enforcement authorities tried to negotiate with her. Lyons said the soldier, who had served for 14 years and held the rank of sergeant first class, was throwing objects around the office and on “a bit of a rampage.” The Army has not revealed the soldier’s name, but said she had been deployed to Iraq in 2007. She was in the third floor of the four-story building that houses the Army’s Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM) at the time of the shooting. Some 1,100 people were in the building at the time, but there were no other reported injuries.
